Buffets aren’t around now thanks to the pandemic, but with several new restaurants serving everything from ramen to daily-made doughnuts to Angus burgers coming to a new plaza at a long-standing Manhattan Beach mall, it could feel like you’re at an outdoor smorgasbord this summer.
Manhattan Village, a 648,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor shopping mall, is undergoing a $250 million renovation and expansion which is changing the look of the approximately 40-year-old retail center and adding a new outdoor plaza called the Village Shops, where more than a dozen restaurants will be located.
A few, such as well-known spots California Pizza Kitchen and Chili’s Grill and Bar, have been at the mall for years and they will be joined by nine more new spots expected to open by the summer.
Here are the restaurants that are opening at the Village Shops soon.
1. Edo Little Bites
Opens: March
The newest restaurant by Chef Edoardo Baldi of e. baldi Ristorante in Beverly Hills will serve breakfast pastries, salads, sandwiches and Italian fare such as lasagna, spaghetti and pizzas. edolittlebites.com.
2. Joey Manhattan Beach
Opens: March
This will be the third Los Angeles county location for the fast-casual Joey restaurant chain, which is based in Canada and serves Asian, Mediterranean, American and other international dishes. joeyrestaurants.com.
3. SunLife Organics
Opens: April
This Malibu-born spot will serve organic smoothies and acai bowls. sunlifeorganics.com.
4. Dan Modern Chinese
Opens: May
Just like the name says, it’s modern Chinese food with dishes including handmade dumplings, noodles and soups. danmodernchinese.com.
5. Smashburger
Opens: June
The popular chain’s menu include classic Angus beef burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches, salads and shakes. smashburger.com.
6. Sidecar Doughnuts and Coffee
Opens: June
Sidecar has multiple locations in Southern California, including a store in Torrance. Doughnuts here are made with seasonal ingredients and fried in small batches every hour. sidecardoughnuts.com.
7. Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream
Opens: June
The Ohio-born chain started serving scoops out of a gas station in 1945 and has since grown to include more than 60 locations across the nation, serving everything from sundaes to popsicles. The South Redondo Beach location almost always has a line, especially in summer. handelsicecream.com.
8. Sweetgreen
Opens: August
Founded in 2007, this national chain is all about keeping it healthy with seasonal salads, chicken plates and bowls. sweetgreen.com.
9. Silverlake Ramen
Opens: August
The casual noodle and ramen spot serves traditional dishes as well as vegan options. silverlakeramen.com.
